Cyber Attacks and the potential impact on you…
May 16, 2017
You will probably have noticed the recent cyber attack. It was in the form of Ransomware which is a type of malware that encrypts a user’s data, then demands payment in exchange for unlocking the data. It was titled ‘WannaCry’ and targeted Window’s XP machines. Friday’s cyber-attack has affected more than 200,000 victims in 150 countries.
There was a leaked set of “Cyber Weapons” (hacking tools) reportedly from the NSA (National Security Agency) in April and it has been suggested that ‘WannaCry’ may have been written utilising this information.
Windows XP was introduced in 2001 so in computing terms is ancient history, there was a patch update available for XP but users infected by WannaCry had been negligent in updating so left themselves vunerable.
Clearly any computer Operation Systems can have holes, errors and back doors which allows hackers to exploit them. While the Macintosh has so far avoided such problems, the leaked Cyber Weapons” did not exclude our platform and, let’s face it, the holes existed before the information was leaked…
So what can you do to avoid such problems hitting you?
Please ensure that you keep up to date with the latest Apple macOS and ensure that you install any system updates as soon as they’re available. There are teams of people (the good guys) monitoring world wide security issues and they make them available whenever possible, just as Microsoft did with XP. Its up to you to install the updates!
