AVA supports i-dott
December 6, 2016
AVA are a strong supporter and sponsor of an exciting young charity, i-dott (Inspiring Designers of Tomorrow Today). Originally formed in 2013 under the name of Camac, i-dott organises promotions and competitions aimed at directly linking academia with the creative industries, thus bridging the gap between education and industry.
The charity exists to primarily enable design students to present their work, through an annual competition to the international wallpaper and textile industries, although this will continue to develop over the coming years. i-dott has a global reach for colleges and Universities in textiles and wallcoverings. This year undergraduates at universities from around Europe were offered the opportunity to submit designs into an international design award winning competition.
The competition had several different briefs to choose from and all the entries were judged by industry professionals and creatives. With 197 entries across 4 categories the standard of entries are increasing and improving year on year. The finalists were awarded prizes at the gala dinner hosted by the i-dott trustees at the sensational Whitworth Art Galley in Manchester.
The awards were presented last year by the charismatic interior designer and TV personality, Mr. Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen and this year the internationally acclaimed cofounder of red or dead Wayne Hemmingway MBE.
Throughout the competition, category winners had the opportunity to meet and discuss with business owners and decision makers from all over the world at the prize giving event, with the added opportunities of being awarded work placements, gaining commissions, selling their works or being offered a position in a design studio. All competition entrant’s works were displayed at the annual fund-raising dinner and up-loaded onto the i-dott website for the exclusive viewing of the i-dott membership. The gala dinner was an extremely successful evening with award winners and industry socialising together. AVA, along with much of the wallcoverings and decorative industries, supported the event in strong numbers with guests travelling from as far a field as USA and Russia to attend the event.
AVA have worked very closely with the charity over the past couple of years, with Debbie Buchan (AVA Customer Services Director) along side other industry and creative professionals judging the final round and becoming a Trustee.
“I have been closely linked to the charity since 2014 and in 2015 I was delighted to be asked to help judge the final round of entrants. Following the gala dinner in 2015 I was flattered to be asked to join the board of trustees and was extremely proud to accept and became an active member of the board in Feburary 2016.
I think its a great competition to be part of as it allows up and coming designers to get involved with industry. It also really does help the students get that foot in the door, providing them with fantastic contacts and access to leading industry professionals, not to mention the exposure and opportunity for students to sell their work!
Since being directly involved with the charity I have seen first hand the calibre of visitors that the students are introduced to and the direct benefits and exposure that the students received and I will be proud to continue to support and grow this.”
